After working in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates for more than 16 years, Hussam decided to move to Canada in search of new opportunities and a better future for his children.

Hussam first arrived in Red Deer, Alberta. He quickly moved to northern British Columbia, feeling that it would be a better fit for his family. Securing a full-time job in a specialized medical unit with Northern Health has helped accelerate Hussam’s plan of bringing his family over soon. Coincidentally, his wife is also a nurse!

Hussam finds joy in his career through new ways to care for his patients, and also in teaching and supporting younger colleagues in their careers. He finds that the working culture in Canada is more collaborative and less rigid than his previous nursing experiences. People are generally open to taking on the work that needs to be done as long as they are qualified.

Hussam has only been in BC for a short time, but he remains amazed at the natural landscapes northern British Columbia has to offer. This environment is ideal for his interest in photography. He also finds his community to be diverse, friendly, and welcoming.

Moving to a new country and adjusting to a public healthcare system can be challenging for internationally educated nurses (IENs). Health Match BC helped Hussam navigate his new environment in British Columbia, and supported him through the process of acquiring his nursing license in BC.

Once Hussam’s family arrives, he can see them all settling into northern British Columbia, and he envisions becoming more engaged with the broader community.  For prospective nurses who are considering moving to BC, Hussam encourages them to make the move.  They will not regret it.
